Online education, mentoring, coaching and support – Uganda

Support to the development of Human Resources (SDHR) project of Enabel- the Belgian development Agency

There are four key stages for project delivery;

Design and develop a set of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) which describe the clinical actions required for a range of emergency conditions and events. 

  1. Clinical and training practice guidance to an agreed single performance standard enabling those required to perform the emergency response to do so correctly and safely 
  2. Clinical reference material from which to draw best practice to guide training activities
  3. Tools of measurement for clinical performance

Design, development and implementation a mentorship and coaching network

  1. A 625 mentor in a subject matter expert that provide Local Mentors with personal support and coaching via the EWP, Skype and email. S/he also provides lectures, online trainings and feedback for Local Learners.
  2. Local Mentors are experienced clinicians from the beneficiary organisation, they provide support and face-to-face coaching for Local Learners to ensure that the project develops true sustainability.
  3. A Local Learner is a member of the beneficiary organisation who is enrolled onto a program of education. 

Development and delivery of a bespoke online learning platform (EWP) for doctors and nurses practicing in rural African communities.

  1. Learner benefit from maximal flexibility in their approach to learning and are supported by a team of subject matter experts remotely. 
  2. This approach allows maximisation of learning value but also engenders a team spirit between the learners which serves to encourage good quality peer support. 
  3. Each learner is assigned a personal tutor who is responsible for ensuring that the online and supportive content meets their needs exactly.

Individual and group clinical mentorship for doctors and nurses

  1. Goal Setting – performance planning to help the mentee identify his or her professional, as well as think about his or her long-term skills development path.
  2. Skills Development – to help the mentee learn specific skill sets in order to develop him or herself in line with the Action Plan
  3. Reflective PracticeReflective practice is, in its simplest form, thinking about or reflecting on what you have done clinically. It is closely linked to the concept of learning from experience, in that you think about what you did, and what happened, and decide from that what you would do differently next time. Reflective Practice is particularly helpful for clinical development when performed with a suitably qualified mentor.
  4. Problem Solving to help the mentee with discovering, analysing and solving problems to overcome obstacles. An activity example for this mentoring objective would be to identify a real problem with his or her mentor and then brainstorm solutions together, as well as discuss pros and cons for each option.
  5. Plan useful activities – assist the mentee to identify and undertake the activities which will provide the best possible opportunities for development
